Twitter for Your Business: Part 1 of 2

Getting your name and building a brand is crucial for any business. Although it may seem daunting at first, there is plenty of information available online to assist users. Twitter’s platform is to connect people with their opinions, passions, and let users know what else is happening in the world. This allows people from all over the world to interact with new people and businesses. It can benefit businesses by informing them and keeping them up to date with what is happening in their industry and community in real-time. This also allows businesses to follow and interact with people outside of their personal network and discover new circles that firms never knew existed. Twitter also helps firms build their brand and allows firms to communicate with their followers and potential customers. In today’s social media world Twitter allows companies to communicate with customers which improves the speed and relationship with customer service (Twitter).


Now that we have a better understanding of what Twitter is, we can look at what makes a tweet. The image provided by Twitter below can give first time users a clearer understanding of a tweet.

1. A tweet can contain text up to 140 characters as well as photos, links, GIFs, and videos.
2. This arrow means reply, which allows users to engage with the topic posted.
3. Retweet, allows businesses or customers the ability to share content. Hitting the “retweet button” twice, shares the tweet as is and hitting the retweet button once, allows users to comment and              retweet the context.
4. The heart symbol means “like” and is the simplest way to positively acknowledge a tweet. It can also be a bookmarking tool that is an easy to refer back to later.
5. Hashtag, is any phrase or word without spaces and starts with the “#” symbol. This allows users to add hashtags to link all related content. A large number of similar hashtags often create trending          topics.
6. A mention, allows users to get another person’s or company’s attention by adding the “@” symbol in front of their username (Twitter).

Now we can look at Twitter vs other social media platforms. Beginning with Facebook which can allow users to block or filter content. On the other hand, Twitter allows every tweet to connect with every follower’s feed. Photo sharing is much easier on Twitter than Pinterest as well. Users can have a conversation around a shared image more easily than dealing with the difficultly on Pinterest’s comment feature. LinkedIn also can make it difficult to reach a broader audience since the platform is based on two-way agreements. Though twitter allows users to follow anyone, strangers, and target potential customers. A tweet can contain a link to a video but, Twitter does not allow users to create a channel or organize your videos for commentary and easy location like YouTube (Kingston).
These are some of the main differences between twitter and other social media platforms. Like most individuals I fail to use Twitter to it's maximize capability. Personally, I use Twitter to follow news happening around the world and to see what is going on with my favorite sports teams. Although utilizing all of them can benefit a company’s brand. Stay tuned, because next we will begin learning how to set up a Twitter and other steps to drive traffic to a company’s website or blog to reach more potential customers.
